When selecting microspheres for a project, density (or specific gravity) is often one of the most critical specifications. Density of microspheres becomes particularly important for applications that require microspheres to be suspended in a fluid. When long-term suspension of microspheres in an aqueous solution is required, it is critical that the density of microspheres is matched as close as possible to the density of water at the correct temperature. Settling time and velocity are proportional to density delta (also known as density mismatch), which means that matching the density of the particle to the density of the liquid is very important for minimizing settling velocity and maximizing the time microspheres spend in suspension. Keep in mind that even the slightest variation in density matters, and densities of liquids sometimes vary significantly with changes in temperature, pressure, and materials added to it.

In addition to the huge selection of spherical powders with densities ranging from 0.05g/cc to 9g/cc, Cospheric is the only company that offers custom density polyethylene microspheres in ranges from 0.96g/cc and 1.2g/cc. Cospheric is also the only company that offers Density Marker Beads, often used for creating density gradients in biotechnology applications and as density calibration or reference particles in other industries. Our spherical particles are characterized with NIST-traceable Density Measurements utilizing the most accurate gas pycnometer on the market.
