Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is an inorganic material with numerous unique properties. It is a semiconductor associated with a large band gap which offers advantages of higher breakdown voltages, ability to sustain large electric fields, lower electronic noise, and high-temperature and high-power operation. In addition, zinc oxide has high refractive index, high thermal conductivity, binding, antibacterial and UV-protection properties. This versatile non-toxic additive is on the U.S. FDA's list of generally recognized as safe, or GRAS, substances and is widely used in medicine, food, construction, electronics and coating applications. Applying ZnO coating on hollow glass microspheres provides additional functionality of flowing low-weight substrate of controlled shape and size.
